Dogs are commonly known as man’s best friend. If you have this best friend, it is always good to handle him with care and training him on several things. Dog collars are mostly used in handling and training dogs. However, you just don’t get any collar size for your dog. You need to find the collar size that fits your dog. There are a few factors you should consider to ensure you purchase the right dog collar size. Here is how to choose the right size collar for your dog.

Dog Breed

When selecting a dog collar, it is necessary to consider the breed of your dog. This is because some collars are recommended for particular dog breed due to the differences in size. While some collars are for certain breed, dogs are not the same.

Proper Measurement

Knowing the breed of your dog is not enough to help you choose the right dog collar size. You will have to consider dog neck by taking the measurements of your dog. You can use a tape measure that is used to measure clothes and measure a few inches down from its head where the collar will rest. Another easy method for measuring your dog’s neck is to place a string around the dog’s neck and measure the string. For small dogs, be sure to add an extra inch to the measurements you get so you can get the right size for the collar of your dog. It is recommended to add two inches for medium sized and large breeds that have weigh than 80 pounds. You should be able to fit two fingers between the dog’s neck and their collar. This is to make sure the collar fits well and does not cause your dog to strain.

Consider Your Dog’s Fur Length

When picking out a collar for your dog, you should also consider the length of the hair of your dog. Getting the right length of the fur, consider taking the measurements after grooming especially if the dog has long hair. Taking the measurements before grooming may result in not getting the right dog collar size. The right dog collar is the one that is adjustable and can fit all the measurements without hurting your dog regardless of the fur length.

Collar Width

It is necessary to note that different collar sizes have different lengths as well as widths. Common widths for dog collars range from ½” to 2”. Consider thicker and wider collars for stronger dog breeds, such as Bernese Mountain Dogs, Great Danes, Mastiffs, Rottweiler’s, and Saint Bernard’s because they can offer more support for the dogs. The greater width also helps to lower the pressure on a larger dog that can result in dog injuries.  However, collars that are 1/2” are more appropriate for miniature or small breed dogs, like the Chihuahua or Yorkshire Terrier. Always choose collars with one to one-and-a-half-inch width when you are not sure about the strength of your puppy.

Adjustable Collars are Ideal for Growing Puppies

When choosing a collar for your new but growing puppy, it is recommended to go with an adjustable one. An adjustable dog collar helps to avoid having to buy multiple collars while your puppy is still growing.

Visibility & Safety

When purchasing a dog collar, many people are focused on the proper fit, and while that is super important, you also want to remember to think about safety when making your decision. LED collars, reflective collars, and illuminated collars are specifically designed for people who walk their pets in low light conditions. By far, dog collars that are LED lighted are USB rechargeable and are the brightest available. Unlike the illuminated or reflective dog collars, the LED collars can be turned on in a solid mode or blinking mode for extra safety.
