If you have a Border Collie, you probably know how energetic they are. No matter how much you try tiring a Border Collie, they will always have some energy left to run, play and chase after you. If you would like your Collie to be both mentally and physically healthy, you will have to exercise him every day.

How Much Exercise Does a Border Collie Need?

Before we continue, you need to know that Border Collies were originally bred to herd sheep. This is not an easy task. It needs a lot of thinking and stamina to accomplish what they do. Even though your Border Collie isn’t herding sheep, he will still need a way to release the energy he has.

Physical activity is very vital for Border Collies. If you are struggling with your Collie, it’s probably because he isn’t getting enough physical activity. When your Border Collie does not get enough exercise, he’ll become stressed and agitated. This can make him chew on things, dig, bark and have other behavior issues.

How much exercise does a Border Collie need? The answer is simple: our Collie needs as much exercise as he can get. On the minimum, ensure he gets at least 10 to 15 minutes to run in a day.

How to Exercise a Border Collie

There are a number of ways you can exercise your Border Collie. Below are some suggestions you can get started with. You are not limited to following these tips only. They are simply just meant to give you ideas. The tips include:

  • Play Fetch – You are lucky if your Collie knows how to play fetch and is good at it. Fetch is the best game you can use to get your dog to run around and have fun at the same time.
  • Take more walks – Make sure you take your dog for walks frequently. This is a great way of keeping him active and socializing because you will be meeting new people during your walk.
  • Run with your Collie – Take your dog along on your morning runs. If you’re not a morning runner, then this is a good reason to start running.
  • Get your Collie a playmate – This option does not apply to every dog owner. However, if you have enough space and can afford to host other dogs, then it is something you can do. Two dogs can keep each other busy while you’re away at work.
  • Let your Collie run around in the yard – Though playing alone can be a lonely activity for your dog, having a large yard can be beneficial. This is because your dog will be able to run around and play.
